History of Gangasagar Mela
The Gangasagar Mela is one of India’s oldest and most sacred pilgrimages, with its roots tracing back to ancient times. It is believed that Kapil Muni meditated at this holy site, making it spiritually significant for Hindus. Mentions of the Gangasagar pilgrimage can also be found in the Mahabharata, where Bhishma learned about the sacredness of bathing at the confluence of the Ganga and the sea.
When and Where the Mela is Held
The Gangasagar Mela takes place every year during Makar Sankranti, attracting millions of pilgrims who take a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga River and the Bay of Bengal at Sagar Island, West Bengal. Devotees believe that bathing here and worshiping Lord Surya (the Sun God) cleanses sins and brings spiritual liberation.
Pooja & Aarti Timings
The rituals begin in the early hours of Makar Sankranti, with pilgrims taking a holy dip from around 3:00 AM. The morning aarti at Kapil Muni Temple follows soon after. Evening pujas light up the island as thousands of diyas illuminate the shore, creating a divine atmosphere.
The Gangasagar Fair
The Mela draws pilgrims and tourists from all over India and abroad. The West Bengal Government organizes extensive facilities such as ferry services, medical camps, sanitation units, and digital booking systems to ensure safety and comfort for visitors. Each year, the event witnesses millions of devotees participating in this sacred gathering of faith, devotion, and cultural unity.
