Malleswar Temple, Bishnupur – History, Architecture & Visitor Guide

Malleswar Temple (also known as Mallesvara Temple) is one of the oldest heritage temples in Bishnupur, Bankura, West Bengal. Malla King Bir Singha built this historic Shiva temple in 1622 AD, making it the earliest dated temple in Bishnupur. Today, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protects this important monument. Moreover, the temple stands close to the famous Jor Bangla Temple, making it easy to include in a Bishnupur heritage tour.

Unlike the well-known terracotta Krishna temples, Malleswar Temple features laterite stone construction and follows the traditional Ek-Ratna (Deul) architectural style. It originally had a Rekha Shikhara. However, builders later replaced it with the distinctive octagonal tower, giving the temple a unique appearance among Bishnupur’s historic monuments.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Although the original Shiva idol is no longer in the sanctum, visitors can still admire the beautifully carved Nandi statue facing the shrine. In addition, the nearby Thakur Dalan reflects the rich cultural traditions of the Malla dynasty. People once used this heritage structure for Durga Puja and Navaratri celebrations.

Today, Malleswar Temple forms an important part of the UNESCO-recognized Bishnupur Temple Town. It offers a peaceful setting, impressive architecture, and deep historical significance. Therefore, history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, photographers, and devotees should include Malleswar Temple in their Bishnupur sightseeing itinerary.
