Firingi Kalibari, Bowbazar – A Historic Kali Temple in Kolkata

Firingi Kalibari is one of the oldest and most revered Kali temples in Kolkata, located at 244 B.B. Ganguly Street, Bowbazar. Dedicated to Maa Siddheswari Kali, this historic temple is believed to be over 500 years old and is closely associated with Anthony Firingi (Hensman Anthony), the Portuguese-born Bengali poet and devoted worshipper of Goddess Kali.

The temple is a popular spiritual destination for devotees seeking blessings, especially on Tuesdays, Saturdays, Amavasya (New Moon), and Kali Puja. Besides Maa Kali, devotees can also worship Lord Shiva, Goddess Shitala, and Goddess Manasa inside the temple.

History

According to local tradition, the temple dates back to 1498 AD (905 Bengali Year). It is believed that Anthony Firingi helped renovate the shrine and popularized it through his deep devotion to Goddess Kali, giving the temple its unique name, “Firingi Kalibari.”
