Thanthania Kalibari Kolkata – History, Timings & Visitor Information

Thanthania Kalibari is one of Kolkata’s oldest and most revered Kali temples, dedicated to Maa Siddheshwari Kali. Established in 1703, this historic temple in North Kolkata has been a center of devotion and spiritual worship for over 300 years. The temple is famous for its unique clay idol of Goddess Kali, which is traditionally repainted and renewed every year. Originally founded by the tantric saint Uday Narayan Brahmachari, the temple later gained prominence through the patronage of Shankar Ghosh. The name “Thanthania” is believed to have originated from the ringing sound of the temple bells that echoed through the surrounding forests.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the historic Thanthania Kalibari in North Kolkata on April 26, 2026, to offer prayers to Goddess Siddheshwari Kali.
