Kankalitala Shaktipeeth is one of the sacred 51 Shakti Peethas in India, located near Bolpur (Santiniketan) in the Birbhum district of West Bengal. Dedicated to Goddess Sati (Parvati/Kali), this holy shrine is believed to be the place where Mother Sati’s waist (Kankal) fell after Lord Vishnu used the Sudarshan Chakra to end Lord Shiva’s Tandava. It is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations for devotees of Shakti.

The temple stands on the banks of the Kopai River, about 8 km from Bolpur Railway Station, and attracts thousands of pilgrims throughout the year.

Mythological Significance

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Sati sacrificed herself during King Daksha’s yajna after he insulted Lord Shiva. Grief-stricken, Lord Shiva carried her body across the universe. To restore cosmic balance, Lord Vishnu cut Sati’s body into pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra. The places where the body parts fell became the 51 Shakti Peethas. At Kankalitala, Sati’s waist (Kankal) is believed to have fallen, making this one of the holiest Shakti shrines in India.
