Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902)

Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902), born as Narendranath Datta on 12 January 1863 in Kolkata, was one of India’s greatest spiritual leaders, philosophers, and the chief disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. He played a pivotal role in introducing Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world.

Vivekananda gained international recognition after his historic speech at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893, beginning with the famous words, “Sisters and Brothers of America.” His message of universal brotherhood, religious harmony, and spiritual unity earned worldwide respect and established India as a center of timeless wisdom.

In 1897, he founded the Ramakrishna Mission, dedicated to education, healthcare, social service, and spiritual development. He also established Belur Math near Kolkata as the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Order.

Before becoming Swami Vivekananda, Narendranath Datta was deeply interested in spirituality and philosophy. He joined the Brahmo Samaj, where he explored monotheism and questioned religious traditions. Seeking the truth, he asked many spiritual leaders, “Have you seen God?”

In 1881, he met Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa at Dakshineswar. Ramakrishna’s direct spiritual experiences and teachings transformed Narendra’s life.

Following Ramakrishna’s passing in 1886, Narendra established the Baranagar Math, the first monastery of the Ramakrishna Order. In December 1886, he and his fellow disciples took formal monastic vows, marking the beginning of the Ramakrishna Math, which later evolved into the globally respected Ramakrishna Math and Mission.

Swami Vivekananda inspired millions with his teachings on Practical Vedanta, self-confidence, character-building, youth empowerment, and service to humanity. His famous message, “Arise, Awake, and Stop Not Till the Goal is Reached,” continues to motivate people across the world.

He attained Mahasamadhi on 4 July 1902 at Belur Math at the age of 39. His birth anniversary, 12 January, is celebrated as National Youth Day in India.
