Bargabhima Shaktipeeth – Vibhash Kapalini Shaktipeeth Tomluk

Bargabhima Temple, also known as Vibhash Shaktipeeth or Kapalini Shaktipeeth, is one of the sacred 51 Shakti Peethas of Hinduism. Located at Tamluk, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal, this ancient temple is dedicated to Goddess Sati as Kapalini (Bhimarupa/Bargabhima), while Lord Shiva is worshipped as Sarvananda Bhairava. According to Hindu tradition, Goddess Sati’s left ankle fell at this holy site, making it one of the most revered Shakti pilgrimage destinations in India.

Situated on the banks of the Rupnarayan River, the temple is approximately 90 km from Kolkata and attracts thousands of devotees throughout the year.

History of Bargabhima Temple

The present temple is believed to be over 1,000 years old and is traditionally associated with the rulers of the ancient Tamralipta kingdom. Tamluk, once known as Tamralipta, was an important port city mentioned in the Mahabharata, Puranas, and ancient Buddhist texts.

The temple architecture beautifully blends Kalinga (Odisha), Bengal Aatchala, and Buddhist influences, making it one of the most unique heritage temples in West Bengal.

Mythological Significance

According to the legend of the Shakti Peethas, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to divide Goddess Sati’s body to calm Lord Shiva after her self-immolation. At Tamluk, Sati’s left ankle fell, sanctifying the place as Vibhash Shaktipeeth.

Another popular legend tells of a fisherwoman who discovered a miraculous pond where dying fish came back to life. King Tamradhwaj witnessed the miracle and built the temple at the sacred spot.

The temple is also associated with Lord Krishna’s Ashwamedha Yagna and is believed to have been visited by the Pandava Bhima.

Temple Architecture

The 60-foot-high temple features a magnificent idol of Goddess Bargabhima, worshipped as Mahishasuramardini. The four-armed deity holds a trident and a human skull while symbolizing the destruction of evil. A large Shiva Linga stands beside the Goddess inside the sanctum.

A spacious courtyard, Natmandir, meditation hall, and sacred pond enhance the peaceful atmosphere of the temple.
