Early Life of Sri Bamakhepa

Sri Bamakhepa (1837–1911), also known as Bamdev Chattopadhyay, was one of India’s greatest Tantric saints and a devoted worshipper of Goddess Tara. He was born in Atla village near Tarapith in Birbhum, West Bengal. A contemporary of Sri Ramakrishna, devotees revere him as the spiritual guardian (Bhairav) of Tarapith Temple.

From an early age, Bamakhepa showed deep devotion to Mother Tara. His complete absorption in divine worship earned him the name “Bamakhepa,” which means “the divinely mad one.” In the Tantric tradition, Khepa describes a saint who has renounced worldly attachments and lives in constant remembrance of God.

Spiritual Journey and Tantra Sadhana

Bamakhepa became the disciple of the renowned Tantric masters Kailashpati Baba and Mokshadananda. Under their guidance, he performed intense Tantra sadhana at the sacred Tarapith Mahashmashan (cremation ground). His unwavering meditation and devotion eventually blessed him with the divine darshan of Goddess Tara.

He lived a simple life and ignored material comforts. Instead, he dedicated every moment to prayer, meditation, and the worship of Mother Tara.

Miracles and Devotion

People from different parts of India visited Bamakhepa to seek his blessings and spiritual guidance. Devotees believed that Mother Tara worked through him to heal the sick, remove suffering, and solve difficult problems. His compassion, humility, and spiritual powers made him one of the most respected saints of Tarapith.

A famous legend tells how temple priests stopped Bamakhepa from eating the temple offerings before presenting them to Goddess Tara. That night, the Maharani of Natore dreamed that Mother Tara called Bamakhepa her beloved son and instructed the priests to feed him before offering food to the Goddess. Since then, devotees have honored Bamakhepa as one of Tarapith’s greatest saints.

Legacy of Sri Bamakhepa

Despite his fame, Bamakhepa remained humble and detached from wealth, power, and social status. He spent most of his life meditating in the cremation ground, singing devotional songs, serving devotees, and spreading unconditional devotion to the Divine Mother.

Sri Bamakhepa attained Mahasamadhi in 1911. Even today, millions of devotees visit his samadhi shrine near Tarapith Temple to seek his blessings. His life continues to inspire spiritual seekers with the ideals of devotion, selflessness, and complete surrender to Mother Tara.
