History of Dakshineswar Kali Temple
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Dakshineswar was a peaceful riverside village near Kolkata. The area later became famous for the historic Dakshineswar Kali Temple, one of the most important Hindu temples in West Bengal.
According to tradition, Rani Rashmoni experienced a divine dream while preparing for a pilgrimage to Varanasi. Following this spiritual experience, she decided to establish a temple dedicated to Goddess Kali. Construction began in 1847, and the temple complex opened for worship in 1855. Since then, the temple has attracted devotees and spiritual seekers from across India and beyond.
The temple follows the Nava-ratna architectural style, which features nine spires. The main shrine houses Goddess Bhavatarini, a form of Goddess Kali, with Lord Shiva lying at her feet. Moreover, the temple complex includes 12 Shiva temples, the Radha-Kanta Temple, and the peaceful Panchavati garden.
The temple also holds a special connection with Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, who served as the temple’s priest. He spent many years at Dakshineswar and practiced intense spiritual disciplines in the temple complex and Panchavati. His spiritual teachings later played an important role in the development of the Ramakrishna movement.
