History of Dakshineswar Kali Temple
In the early 1800s, Dakshineswar was a quiet village on the eastern bank of the Ganges, surrounded by dense forests. Rani Rashmoni of Janbazar, inspired by a divine dream during her pilgrimage to Varanasi, decided to build a temple for Goddess Kali. After acquiring 20 acres of land — part of which belonged to Christians and part was a Muslim burial ground — construction began in 1847, symbolizing religious unity. The temple was completed in 1855 at a cost of ₹9 lakhs and inaugurated on the auspicious day of Snana Yatra.
Built in the traditional Nava-ratna Bengal style, the grand three-storied, south-facing temple stands on a high platform with nine spires and a spacious Natmandir (prayer hall). The sanctum houses Goddess Bhavataraini (Kali) standing on Lord Shiva’s chest over a silver lotus.
The temple complex spans 25 acres and includes 12 Shiva temples along the riverbank, a Radha-Kanta Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna and Radha, and the serene Panchavati garden — where Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, an early priest of the temple, meditated. Today, Dakshineswar remains one of Kolkata’s most revered temples, especially vibrant on Tuesdays and Saturdays during the Sandhya Aarti.
